Chapter 13

Inessa

Waking up next to Mikhail isn’t as scary as it was before. Now, it’s a little bit exhilarating. I just have to make sure Mikhail doesn’t want me only for sex. I hadn’t planned on doing what we did last night—I’d actually wanted to avoid anything of that nature—but if I’m going to make this marriage work, I need to be willing to give myself to my husband. Last night was a start.

As I inhale and wipe the tiredness from my eyes, I can feel Mikhail’s fingers on my arm, stroking my skin. I drop my hand and look at him.

“Good morning,” I say in a groggy voice, my mouth dry from sleep.

“Good morning,” Mikhail says, his voice sounding lighter than I’ve ever heard it before.

We stare at each other, neither one speaking. He looks so handsome in the morning light with his dark blond hair tousled over his forehead and his eyes looking rested. They somehow look even bluer in the morning, too. He’s shirtless, and his chest hair and broad shoulders make him look even more manly. Arousal begins stirring between my legs.

“So …” I say, feeling like one of us should break the ice. “How are you?” I want to hit my head. That’s a stupid question, but Mikhail smiles that tiny smile of his. It’s barely more than a lip twitch, but it’s his way of grinning. On anyone one else, it would make them seem angry. On Mikhail, it makes him seem more serious. I just hope he can begin to let his guard down around me.

“Good.” His eyes rake over me. Goosebumps break out on my arms, and I rub them, trying to make them go away before Mikhail notices. “More than good.”

“Is it because of me?” I ask, sounding way too hopeful. I want this marriage to work. I don’t want to be afraid of my husband.

He lets out a rumbly sigh. “I think it might be. Until we married, I’d never woken up with a woman in my bed before.”

“Really?” I try to squash the excitement in my heart.

He reaches over and plays with the strap on my nightgown. “As I told you on our date, I’ve never really dated any women. I just fucked them.” I try not to flinch at his word choice.

“And you never invited them into your bed?” I pat the mattress. “I mean, this bed.”

His eyes follow my hand. “No. Never. We usually spent time in hotels or at their places.”

“And you never spent the whole night with any of them?”

He shakes his head no. “I didn’t feel the need to.”

“How come?”

He shrugs and strokes the back of my shoulder with his fingers. “They got what they needed. I got what I needed. There was no point in prolonging the inevitable outcome. We both knew it was a one-time deal. I never saw a reason to stay beyond that.”

I reach out to touch his chest. Mikhail takes a sharp inhale when I glide my fingers over his skin, playing with his chest hair, and his eyes darken.
